You’ve been hired – all the interviews and phone calls are over, all the negotiations are done. After the high of getting the job has passed, you realize: it’s now your time to shine. You have to not only show up, you must also fulfill the promises you made and prove that your past experiences can translate to the new workplace.
As a new employee, there are 5 concrete ways you can make an impact the second you’re hired:
1. Show some enthusiasm.
You may have been hired for your skill set, your drive, or both. But the quickest way to make a dent at your company is to continue turning up the enthusiasm dial. Lack enthusiasm, and it’s game over from day one.
Showing excitement lets your new boss, peers, and everyone around you know that you care and that you’re in it for the long haul. Most people have initial interest or put on a front of excitement, but the key is to show true enthusiasm. After all, you’re employed, and you have a new opportunity to thrive before you. Show up to work with a positive and upbeat attitude, and you’re sure to be noticed – and appreciated.
2. Be consistent.
Anyone can start a job working at full capacity, coming up with new ideas, all while having a smile on his face. It’s the people who consistently maintain that pace who become known for being accountable and producing reliably high-quality work. Don’t burn the candle at both ends and fall short after a few weeks.
Devise a plan and mentality that will keep you motivated to pump out quality work over a long period of time. Consistency is an attribute that’s widely noticed among leaders. And remember: if you land a leadership role, the commitments only increase from there. Prove you’re consistent enough to handle them.
3. Know your role.
Coming into a new position, it’s easy to fall into the trap of wanting to do everything at once to get noticed as a star player. While it may be tempting to try to improve every department and aspect of your new company, be careful not to push. Understand the role you were hired for, and make sure to meet the demands of that role to the fullest.
Once you’ve become accomplished in your role, you can see what other tasks or projects you can take on to help the company further. Focus and strategy always beat out hard work and eagerness.
4. Ask for feedback.
Asking for feedback, especially when you’re new, can seem daunting. No one wants to have his or her faults pointed out. However, the best way to accelerate your growth, both from a personal and professional standpoint, is to ask for ways in which you can improve.
Asking your co-workers or bosses how you can develop better skills is one of the easiest ways to paint yourself as the go-getter they knew they hired. In addition, it’s a surefire way to ensure you’re being efficient and fulfilling the true needs of the company and your role.
The fact is you’re going to make plenty of mistakes within the first few months of your new job. Look at those mistakes as lessons, rather than shortcomings on your part. People who aren’t defeated by setbacks are incredibly valuable.
5. Connect with your new family.
Being the new guy or girl is intimidating, but the worst thing you can do is hide in your cubicle. The longer you wait to introduce yourself and meet others at your new company, the harder it’s going to be.
Make an effort to reach out to your new family. Believe it or not, they want to make you feel as welcome as possible. (If they don’t, you might have applied to the wrong place!)
Find out when the next work social is, or suggest a time to hang out with your co-workers outside of work. This will provide a more informal setting to get to know everyone, as well as give everyone an opportunity to loosen up. It’s important to remember that the bond between you and your new family will carry you through the tough times and create an emotional tie to motivate you to contribute to the company’s growth.
Try these moves, with the understanding that it’s not how fast you get noticed, but how much you can contribute to the company, that matters. By deciding that your goal is to produce high-quality, consistent, and positive results, you will amaze your leadership, peers, and yourself with how much you will accomplish. Those promises will no longer loom large – they’ll simply feel inevitable.
