Get a Job That Helps Your Fellow Man

| December 31, 2012 | 0 Comments

Most people can attest to the fact that they’d like to do something with their lives that could help to improve the lives of others. Sometimes, figuring out what to do with one’s career is easier said than done. However, it’s not always clear which paths will allow you to make a fair amount of money while helping others at the same time. But the fact is there are a great deal of different jobs that one could take on in order to improve both their career and the lives of others.

The following are just a few jobs that you might wish to consider, each of which is not only admirable, but can lead to a comfortable career overall.

Social Worker

Being a social worker can be extremely rewarding and is a great path for those who like working with people. Social workers have the opportunity to wear a variety of different hats, as they can find themselves performing a diverse amount of tasks on a daily basis. For example, some social workers work with underprivileged individuals in order to help them get their lives on track, while others work with those who suffer from developmental disabilities.

In order to become a social worker, you’ll want to consider obtaining a bachelor’s degree in social work. This will not only help you to get a better job, but is required for filling certain positions. It can be very helpful to intern with a social worker as well, which will give you a better idea of what the job is like before you jump in head-first.

Social workers can make an average of $45k a year, with potential to make even more. The structure of the social work field is largely hierarchal, and the more you move upwards, the most responsibility over other workers, projects, finances, and companies you’ll have. However, the majority of social workers don’t do it for the money – they do it for the people they help.

Counselor

The need for counselors has never been so strong than it is in today’s world. Be it poverty, death, grief, or a general sense of depression, there are plenty of reasons why one could benefit from seeing a counselor. Counselors who stick with their jobs for long periods of time often find themselves making a great deal of money, especially if they are able to open a successful private practice, upwards of $100 an hour or more.

Even so, most find that the money isn’t as important as the actual helping of clients, which can make a huge difference in many peoples’ lives, including your own. There are many fields of counseling as well, and whether you want to help people deal with sexual healing, emotional fortitude, grief recovery, family problems, or phobia recovery, you will have your hands full in nearly every area. In order to become a counselor, you should consider getting a masters in clinical counseling or social work.

Ministry/Pastoral Work

Going into ministry/pastoral work is certainly not for everyone, but those who enter into this profession can attest that there’s no better way to feel good about the work that one does. Ministry degree programs are perfect for those who wish to jump into this profession, and don’t have to be expensive or time-consuming to take. Entering into this profession can take you all over the world, and is more than worth taking the time to look into while making a base salary of around $40k a year to start with.

Ministers and pastors have the benefits of a huge field of work – missionary work (traveling the world), church-building, campus/educational ministry, even the logistics side of spirituality (accounting, business, and management in church). Each field can take you to a different area, age, gender, and ethnic group, whatever your passion may be.

Getting a job that helps your fellow man is a great way thing to focus your career on. The more you work towards doing so, the more likely it is that you’ll be successful in what you’re trying to do.
